Doctor Sleep (2019) |
The character Danny Torrance first appeared as a boy with psychic abilities named "the shining" in King's novel The Shining. Kubrick's 1980 movie also featured the child character. Dan Torrance is featured as an adult in the novel Doctor Sleep and its film adaptation. Flanagan said the film Doctor Sleep is an adaptation of King's book, but it would also be "in the same cinematic universe" as The Shining by Kubrick. The director said he was making an effort to resolve the inconsistencies between the book and movie The Shining.
Warner bro. Warner bro. Shortly after the release of Doctor Sleep in 2013, pictures began developing a film adaptation. Writer-producer Akiva Goldsman wrote a script, but until the box office success of her 2017 horror film It, also based on a novel by King, the studio did not secure a budget for the film. Flanagan has been hired to rewrite the script of Goldsman and direct the film. Filming started in the state of Georgia in September 2018, covering Atlanta and the surrounding area, and finished in December 2018.
Warner Bros. is planning to release Doctor Sleep in theaters worldwide on October 30, 2019 and on November 8, 2019 in the United States and Canada.

Recognizing instinctively that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his aid against the ruthless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed on the shine of innocent people in their search for immortality. Dan and Abra are engaged in a vicious life-or-death struggle with Rose, forming an unlikely alliance. Connections to The Shining novel and film
Dr. Sleep is based on Stephen King's 2013 horror novel of the same name. The novel is a sequel to The Shining, King's 1977 novel. Director Stanley Kubrick adapted the 1977 novel to a 1980 horror film of the same name. With the 1997 television miniseries, King was critical of Kubrick's film adaptation to the point of writing and producing a new adaptation.
Although Doctor Sleep is supposed to be a direct adaptation of the sequel novel of 2013, director Mike Flanagan said Doctor Sleep would still "recognize the The Shining of Kubrick in some way." Flanagan said, "It's an adaptation of Doctor Sleep's book, which is Stephen King's sequel to his novel The Shining. But it also occurs a lot in the same cinematic universe that Kubrick created in his adaptation of The Shining." He explained working with all the sources, "Reconciling all three sources, sometimes very different, was kind of the most challenging and exciting aspect of this creatively for us." He first read the book and then had a talk with King to figure out adapting all sources. Flanagan recreated scenes from The Shining as part of the process to be used in flashbacks. Like The Shining, he always rejected the horror movie theme of jump scares.
Production
Warner bro. Warner bro. Pictures started to develop Doctor Sleep's film adaptation as early as 2014. In 2016, writer-producer Akiva Goldsman revealed that the movie for Warner Bros would be written and produced. Warner Bros. has been unable to negotiate a budget for Doctor Sleep or for a prequel to be named The Shining Overlook Hotel for several years. Warner Bros. released It at the end of 2017, a film adaptation of King's 1986 novel of the same name, and its success in the box office led the studio to doctor sleep's fast-track production. In January 2018, Warner Bros. hired Mike Flanagan to rewrite the script of Goldsman and direct the film. Flanagan said why he was interested in directing Doctor Sleep, "It focuses on subjects that are most interesting to me, such as childhood trauma leading to adulthood, addiction, family breakdown, and after effects, decades later." The cast was recruited from June to November 2018.
Filming started in the U.S. state of Georgia in September 2018; locations included Atlanta and St. Simons. Covington, Canton, Stone Mountain, Midtown, Porterdale, and Fayetteville are different locations in the Atlanta area. Production was completed in December 2018. In January 2019, the film had been edited in Flanagan.
The film score will be written by The Newton Brothers (Andy Grush and Taylor Stewart), who also wrote scores for earlier works by Flanagan.
Themes
Writer Stephen King said he wrote Doctor Sleep because he imagined what it would be like for Danny Torrance to grow up. In the movie, Flanagan said, "Danny is so traumatized by what he's been through, he has no idea how to deal with it." McGregor said, "Dan Torrance's early philosophy in the story is not to use the shine. He's intoxicated to avoid the traumatic experiences, the ghosts of the Overlook Hotel.
Release
Warner bro. Warner bro. Pictures is planning to release Doctor Sleep in theaters worldwide on October 30, 2019 and on November 8, 2019 in the United States and Canada. It was originally planned for release on January 24, 2020. Deadline Hollywood said Warner Bros represented the re-scheduling, which gave the film "a big vote of confidence."
BoxOffice estimated that on its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada, Doctor Sleep will gross between $20 million and $30 million. "Early social and trailer trends are indicative of a potential box office hit if reviews and audience reaction prove favorable," the magazine wrote, but added, "Doctor Sleep's primary barrier to breakout status could be how dependent it is on younger audience familiarity with the origin Stephen King novels and/or The Shining.
Conclusion
Years after "The Shining" events, a now-adult Dan Torrance meets a young girl with similar powers to her and tries to protect her from a cult known as The True Knot which preys on children with powers to stay alive.
