In 1963, the Ford Motor Company approached Enzo Ferrari about a possible buy-out of Ferrari. Ferrari abruptly broke off negotiations when Enzo learned that the deal included the acquisition of Scuderia Ferrari, Ferrari's racing team that won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1958 and every year from 1960 to 1965. Le Mans is the oldest active sports car endurance race in the world, run every year since 1923. Henry Ford II, irritated by being rebuffed, ordered his division of racing to build a car to beat Scuderia Ferrari.

The film tells how car designer Carroll Shelby and race car driver Ken Miles are leading a team of Ford's American engineers and designers to create a race car that can beat legendary Ferrari. They're actually making the Ford GT40 for a showdown at Le Mans ' 1966 24 Hours.
