For years, a biography on Harriet Tubman had been in the works, with several actresses rumored to star, including Viola Davis. In February 2017, Erivo was cast, much of the cast and crew joined the following year, and in October 2018, principal photography began in Virginia.

On September 10, 2019, the film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Focus Features is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on November 1, 2019. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performance of Erivo, but lamented the story's formal approach.

Production

Viola Davis was set to start in 2015 and produce a biopic of Harriet Tubman, but it never came to fruition. Development started in May 2016 on a new film. Cynthia Erivo was casted as Tubman in February 2017, with Gregory Allen Howard directing Seith Mann from a screenplay.

In September 2018, Focus Features was announced as the new distributor, Kasi Lemmons attached as producer, and Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, and Clarke Peters were added to the cast. Janelle Monáe was confirmed for the film in October among several new castings, with shooting scheduled to begin in Virginia on October 8, 2018, lasting until December.

Release

It had its world premiere on September 10, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It is scheduled to release on November 1, 2019 in the United States.

Box office

Harriet will be released alongside Terminator in the United States and Canada: Dark Destiny, Arctic Dogs and Motherless Brooklyn, and its opening weekend is expected to be about $8 million.
