Production

Norton had been developing the film since the early 2000s, though he was uncertain as to whether he would direct. In February 2014, the project was set, with Norton directing.

Production began in New York City in February 2018, with featuring, among others, Norton, Willem Dafoe, Bruce Willis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Alec Baldwin. A couple of weeks later Bobby Cannavale and Dallas Roberts joined the cast. On March 22, under the set of the film, a fire broke out in the building's cellar where production took place. The ensuing fire killed Michael R. Davidson of Engine 69 from FDNY Firefighter (posthumously promoted to Lieutenant). The next day, production was temporarily suspended and a week later resumed. More shooting took place in Troy, New York, in December 2018.

Soundtrack

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke composed his Atoms for Peace bandmate Flea's horns for the film "Daily Battles." Norton persuaded jazz musician Wynton Marsalis to rearrange the track as a 1950s Miles Davis inspired ballad. On 21 August, both versions were released on streaming services and will be released on 4 October as a vinyl single.

Release

At the Telluride Film Festival on 30 August 2019, Motherless Brooklyn had its world premiere. It also premiered on September 10, 2019 at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and will be released on November 1, 2019 in the United States. It was screened as the closing film of the 2019 New York Film Festival at the San Diego International Film Festival.

Box office

Motherless Brooklyn will be released alongside Terminator in the United States and Canada: Dark Fate, The Irishman, Harriet and Arctic Dogs, and its opening weekend is projected to cost roughly $6 million.

Conclusion

Set against New York's backdrop in the 1950s, Motherless Brooklyn follows Lionel Essrog, a depressed private detective afflicted with Tourette's Syndrome, as he attempts to solve his mentor's murder, Frank Minna's only brother.
