Production

It was announced in March 2018 that Taika Waititi, as an imaginary Adolf Hitler, would not only direct but also co-star in the film. Speaking of the role meaning, Waititi said "It's my version of... a lonely boy's best version of his father, which is really his dad," referring to the fact that in the movie, the protagonist, a 10-year-old boy, is desperate to join Hitler's ranks during World War II. Later that month, Scarlett Johansson joined the cast to play the mother of the lead kid, who is secretly anti-Nazi. Sam Rockwell joined the cast in April 2018 to play "a Nazi leader running a camp for Hitler Youth." In May 2018, Rebel Wilson joined the cast to represent "the young man has just been recruited to attend a ruthless teacher at the Hitler Youth Camp." Soon afterward, shooting was also set to start in Prague. Newcomer Roman Griffin joined the cast as Johansson's brother later that month, while Kiwi Thomasin McKenzie was cast as Elsa Korr, the Jewish girl hidden in her home by Johansson. Alfie Allen was cast as Finkel in June 2018, the second in command of Captain Klenzendorf, while Captain Deertz, a Gestapo officer, cast Stephen Merchant.

The main production began on May 28, 2018. Reshooting was completed in February 2019.
