It was announced in February 2018 that Willem Dafoe was cast into the movie, with Robert Eggers directing a screenplay he wrote with his brother, Max Eggers. Youree Henley, Lourenço Sant'Anna, Rodrigo Teixeira and Jay Van Hoy, under their RT features, New Regency and Parts & Labor banners, respectively, will serve as producers on the film. A24 will distribute the film in the United States, while the international release will be handled by Universal Pictures and Focus Features. Robert Pattinson joined the film's cast that same month.
